Dr. Julie Liu, Austin cat behavior veterinarian, with her cat Puff

About our mobile Austin cat vet Dr. Julie Liu (she/her)

Welcome!

I’m a Cat Friendly and Fear Free veterinarian and cat lover with over 15 years of experience in general practice. I’ve always had a special passion for behavior and advocating for the emotional health of pets, particularly when it comes to felines.

Outside of clinical practice, I’ve written numerous articles for Fear Free on topics such as preparing your cat for their annual exam and how to make exam rooms feline friendly. I serve on the Fear Free speakers bureau and volunteer for the Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s Cat Friendly Practice committee, which strives to make vet care less stressful for cats and cat parents.

I’ve been featured as a subject matter expert in the New York Times, provide veterinary expertise as a feline medical reviewer for Business Insider, have presented at numerous national veterinary conferences, and was featured in Today’s Veterinary Business. As the past founding Vice President of the Relief Veterinary Medical Association, I helped advocate for relief veterinarians and relief technicians at the local and national level.

Through my consulting company Flux Veterinary, I provide feline friendly team training, clinic implementation, and subject matter expertise for pet brands and media — nationally and remotely. See below for more details on working with me professionally.

In my personal life I’m the cat mom to Puff, a stately senior with anxiety, chronic FIC, and a lifelong fear of the vet. Puff has taught me a lot about what to do—and what not to do—when it comes to behavior. He inspires me to continue learning and finding ways to enrich the emotional lives of all of my patients.

While Puff is my only cat now, at one point I had 3 cats and a dog, and over the years I struggled with fighting cats, cat-dog conflict, a cat who was pooping outside the litterbox, and noise phobia. I understand firsthand the stress that behavior issues can cause in the home, and bring my years of cat parent and veterinary experience to every consult.

When I’m not being a vet, I enjoy family time with Puff and my partner Brian, backyard birding, learning Spanish, and trying new food places. Learn more about me by listening to my podcast interviews on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s My Veterinary Life, the House Call Vet Cafe, Why Do Pets Matter, and The Veterinary Behaviour Chat.
